What's Happening?
UNICEF has announced the formation of a Technical Advisory Group on Child and Adolescent Mental Health Measurement (TAG-CAMHM), which includes youth advisors. This initiative aims to improve the collection and use of data on mental health among children
and adolescents globally. The group will consist of researchers, practitioners, and five youth advisors aged 18-24, who will bring their lived experiences to the table. These advisors will work alongside experts to influence how mental health data is collected and utilized, with the goal of shaping better mental health policies and services. Successful applicants will receive a stipend and opportunities to participate in global advocacy initiatives.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of this advisory group is significant as it addresses the gap in reliable, youth-informed data on mental health, which is crucial for developing effective policies and services. By involving young people directly, UNICEF ensures that the data reflects the needs and perspectives of those most affected. This initiative could lead to more informed decision-making and improved mental health outcomes for children and adolescents worldwide. It also highlights the importance of youth participation in global health discussions, potentially influencing future policy frameworks and funding allocations.
What's Next?
The youth advisors will begin their two-year term, participating in meetings and contributing to the development of mental health measurement tools. They will also engage in advocacy and co-author technical outputs. UNICEF will continue to encourage applications from diverse backgrounds, particularly from the Global South, to ensure a wide range of perspectives. The group's work will likely influence future UNICEF initiatives and potentially inspire similar efforts by other organizations.
