A recent study published in Food & Function suggests that consuming nuts may positively impact cognitive function, particularly in individuals with lower diet quality and reduced physical activity. Researchers analyzed data from 1,771 adults in the Framingham
Heart Study Offspring cohort over approximately a decade. The study found a positive association between higher nut intake and better global cognition among people without a history of stroke. Notably, this association was observed even at very low intake levels, with a median nut intake of just 1.3 grams per day, equivalent to about one almond or a couple of pistachios. The link between nuts and cognition was more pronounced in groups with less healthy diets and lower activity levels. Additionally, among stroke survivors, greater nut consumption was linked to higher levels of VEGF, a protein involved in blood vessel growth and potential neuroprotection. However, the study did not find an association between nut intake and the risk of developing stroke or dementia over the 10-year follow-up period.
