The U.S. Air Force has issued a Request for Information (RFI) to identify a new ground-based air defense artillery system. This system is intended to protect U.S. air bases located in various countries globally from threats posed by drones and cruise
missiles. The RFI specifies a need for a medium-caliber gun system that utilizes relatively inexpensive ammunition. The primary targets for this system are subsonic cruise missiles and drones. Historically, ground-based air defense for U.S. military installations was primarily managed by the U.S. Army, meaning the Air Force did not possess its own dedicated gun systems for this purpose. This RFI represents a market study, not an immediate procurement, to explore available technologies.
