What's Happening?
General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada has introduced the Grizzly LAV 10x10 Self-Propelled Howitzer at CANSEC 2026. This new artillery system is designed to replace the Canadian Army's aging M777 artillery fleet and enhance long-range firepower capabilities.
The Grizzly LAV combines a domestic 10x10 chassis with the Artillery Gun Module from KNDS Deutschland, an unmanned 155 mm/L52 system. This system has already been selected by Switzerland and integrated into Germany's Boxer RCH 155. The unveiling comes as part of Canada's Indirect Fires Modernization program, which seeks to acquire 80 to 98 self-propelled 155 mm howitzers to replace 33 M777 towed guns. The Grizzly LAV is noted for its fire-on-the-move capability, aligning with modern battlefield demands for mobility and rapid repositioning.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of the Grizzly LAV 10x10 represents a significant step in modernizing Canada's artillery capabilities. By replacing the older M777 howitzers, the Canadian Army aims to enhance its operational effectiveness and adaptability in modern combat scenarios. The Grizzly's ability to fire while on the move provides a tactical advantage, allowing for quick repositioning and increased survivability on the battlefield. This development also highlights Canada's commitment to maintaining a robust defense posture and supporting domestic manufacturing capabilities, as the Grizzly is a Canadian-built system. The decision to integrate a proven artillery module from KNDS Deutschland further underscores the importance of international collaboration in defense technology.
What's Next?
As the Grizzly LAV enters the competition for the Canadian Army's Indirect Fires Modernization program, the focus will likely shift to evaluating its performance against other contenders. The Canadian government will need to assess factors such as manufacturing location, sustainment, fleet commonality, and lifecycle costs. The outcome of this competition will determine the future of Canada's artillery capabilities and could influence similar modernization efforts in other countries. Additionally, the Grizzly's success could lead to further international interest and potential export opportunities for General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada.
