What's Happening?
Cleantech company Uplift360, in collaboration with Leonardo, has successfully transformed an end-of-life helicopter rotor blade into a prototype drone arm. This project demonstrates the potential of chemical
recycling to convert high-performance aerospace waste into reusable materials. Utilizing Uplift360's ChemR low-temperature chemical recycling process, high-quality carbon fiber was extracted from a rotor blade originally used on an EH101 helicopter. This reclaimed fiber was then repurposed into a structural component for a drone prototype, showcasing that chemically recycled composites can perform as well as virgin materials. The initiative began under a research and development contract with Leonardo in May 2025, aiming to test ChemR's capability to handle complex composite waste. The project exceeded expectations by not only recovering the carbon fiber but also validating its use in manufacturing.
