What's Happening?
PJM Interconnection, a major U.S. electrical grid operator, has received approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to simplify its rules for connecting generation resources at the distribution level. This change, effective from April
28, 2026, will allow all resources in PJM's region to be processed under state and local rules instead of federal regulations. The modification aims to streamline the interconnection process, reallocating time and resources to focus on transmission-level interconnections and providing greater clarity to project developers.
Why It's Important?
The approval from FERC is significant as it could lead to more efficient and faster integration of renewable energy resources into the grid. By simplifying the interconnection process, PJM can potentially accelerate the deployment of distributed energy resources, which is crucial for meeting renewable energy targets and enhancing grid reliability. This change could also encourage more investment in renewable energy projects, benefiting developers and consumers by potentially lowering energy costs and increasing energy security.
