A recent study titled 'Assessing Farm-Level Digital Maturity in European Agriculture: The Digital Farm Index and Investment Barriers to Agriculture 4.0' reveals that large European farms are advancing
rapidly in digital agriculture, while smaller farms lag behind. The study, conducted by researchers from 'Ion Ionescu de la Brad' Iasi University of Life Sciences, introduces the Digital Farm Index to evaluate technology adoption across 18 EU countries. It highlights that digital maturity in agriculture depends on connectivity, precision agriculture, robotics, and farm-management systems. However, the adoption of these technologies is uneven, with larger farms benefiting more due to their ability to spread fixed costs over extensive areas. The study also points out that while national statistics may show high territorial coverage of digital tools, the actual adoption is concentrated among a few large farms, leaving smaller operators behind.
