Derrick Moore, a 47-year-old elementary school teacher from Georgia and father of four, tragically died while saving a 10-year-old girl, Summer McCallum, from a rip current in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Moore was enjoying a day at the beach before
the new school year when he heard cries for help. Without hesitation, he rushed into the ocean, approximately 30 yards offshore, where Summer was being pulled out by the strong current. Summer was on a beach trip with her uncle, Ernest McCallum, to honor the sixth anniversary of her father’s death. Both Moore and Ernest McCallum entered the water to rescue Summer. Ernest McCallum was briefly pulled under by the current but resurfaced to see Moore with Summer.
