What's Happening?
Lloyd’s Register has initiated the Future Navigators Schools Programme pilot in Lagos, Nigeria, aimed at encouraging young people to pursue careers in maritime and STEM fields. The program targets students aged 14-16 across three schools, combining in-person
workshops with digital tools to make these subjects more engaging. The initiative includes a mobile game that allows students to explore maritime themes and solve industry-related problems. This program is part of Lloyd’s Register's broader efforts to increase awareness of maritime career pathways and support the development of future workforce skills, particularly among young girls.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is significant as it addresses the growing need for skilled professionals in the maritime industry, which is crucial for global trade and economic stability. By focusing on STEM education, the program helps bridge the gap between education and industry, ensuring that students are equipped with the necessary skills for future careers. Additionally, it promotes gender diversity in a traditionally male-dominated field, potentially leading to more inclusive and innovative industry practices. The program also reflects a commitment to social impact by providing educational opportunities that can lead to economic empowerment.
What's Next?
Following the pilot workshops, Lloyd’s Register plans to evaluate the program's impact and explore opportunities for expansion. This includes developing an online digital learning platform to reach a broader audience. The success of this pilot could lead to similar initiatives in other regions, further strengthening the connection between education and the maritime industry. Stakeholders such as educational institutions and industry leaders may collaborate to enhance the program's reach and effectiveness.
