What's Happening?
The SCN Coalition, in collaboration with Syngenta, Indigo, and BASF, has declared a National Nematode Day to raise awareness about the soybean cyst nematode (SCN), a significant threat to soybean yields in North America. SCN is the leading yield-reducing pathogen for soybeans, causing an estimated $1.5 billion in losses annually. Despite the absence of visible symptoms, yield losses may still occur, particularly in years with higher rainfall. Soil testing for SCN is crucial, especially as the pest shows growing resistance to PI-88788, the most common source of SCN resistance in soybean seeds. Testing is recommended at the end of the soybean season, as nematode levels peak then. Free testing opportunities are available in several states, including Nebraska and Ohio.
Why It's Important?
The soybean cyst nematode poses a significant economic threat to U.S. agriculture, particularly in the soybean industry. As SCN resistance to common genetic defenses increases, farmers face the challenge of managing this pest to prevent substantial yield losses. The economic impact extends beyond individual farmers to the broader agricultural economy, potentially affecting supply chains and market prices. The introduction of new management tools, such as the Nemasphere trait by BASF and the Victrato seed treatment by Syngenta, offers hope for improved control measures. However, the need for effective stewardship and integrated management practices remains critical to prolong the efficacy of these solutions.
What's Next?
Farmers and agricultural stakeholders are encouraged to adopt integrated management strategies, including crop rotation and the use of SCN-resistant varieties. The development and regulatory approval of new tools like Nemasphere and Victrato are anticipated to provide additional options for managing SCN. Continued research and collaboration among agricultural companies and institutions will be essential to address the evolving threat of SCN and ensure sustainable soybean production.
