What's Happening?
A new 120-page graphic novel, 'Assiégés - Monaco,' is set to be released, revisiting the four-month Genoese siege of Monaco's le Rocher in 1506-1507. The graphic novel, published by Delcourt, blends meticulous historical research with fictional elements
to portray the conflict and the psychological warfare involved. Historian Laurent Vissière, a professor of medieval history, initiated the project, aiming to explore the psychological dimension of sieges beyond a purely military perspective. The story centers on Luciano Grimaldi's efforts to defend Monaco against a much larger Genoese force, while awaiting military support from King Louis XII of France. This historical event, which ended in a Genoese defeat, was a crucial moment in Monaco's independence. Six thousand copies of the graphic novel will be available in bookstores in France and Monaco on Thursday, October 8, 2026.
Why It's Important?
This graphic novel offers a unique and accessible way to engage with a significant historical event that shaped Monaco's independence. By combining rigorous historical research with a fictional narrative, it aims to demystify the period and help a broader audience understand the complexities of medieval sieges. The project highlights the importance of historical preservation and interpretation, bringing to light a lesser-known episode of European history. The involvement of historian Laurent Vissière ensures a strong factual foundation, while the graphic novel format makes the content appealing to a wider readership, including those who might not typically engage with historical texts. The narrative also explores themes of resilience, leadership, and the psychological toll of warfare, which remain relevant today.
What's Next?
The graphic novel 'Assiégés - Monaco' will be released on Thursday, October 8, 2026, in France and Monaco. This release is part of a larger series of five comic books focusing on different sieges, with previous volumes covering Orléans and Beauvais, and future volumes planned for Nancy and Rouen in 2027. The series aims to make medieval history accessible to a general audience. The Monaco volume, prefaced by Prince Albert II, is expected to generate interest in the Principality's history. The creators plan to continue using a blend of historical accuracy and fictional storytelling to bring these historical events to life, with each volume approaching a siege from a different perspective, such as following an artilleryman or focusing on women's experiences.
Beyond the Headlines
The graphic novel delves into the deeper implications of historical events by exploring the psychological aspects of siege warfare and the daily lives of those affected. It highlights how historical narratives can be constructed and interpreted, especially when primary sources are limited, as was the case with the 100-page manuscript journal of the siege. The inclusion of fictional characters, such as two young friends representing different social strata, allows for a more nuanced portrayal of the human experience during conflict, including the often-forgotten role of children. The story also touches upon the ethical complexities of loyalty and betrayal, as Monaco was internally divided between Genoese and independent allegiances. The use of psychological tactics, like the pig ruse to mislead the besiegers about food supplies, illustrates the ingenuity and desperation involved in survival during prolonged conflicts.
