What's Happening?
NASA's Human Research Program (HRP) is actively seeking novel approaches to monitor, prevent, and treat blood clots, specifically venous thrombosis, that may occur during spaceflight. Venous thrombosis involves the development of a blood clot in a vein,
commonly in the legs, but in space, clots in the upper body, particularly the jugular veins, are a concern. While these clots might be asymptomatic, they can be detected via ultrasound. NASA is requesting project plans and budget quotes for retrospective or prospective research focusing on current, enhanced, or novel strategies to surveil, reduce the risk of, and/or prevent or treat venous thrombosis during both spaceflight and future exploration missions. The deadline for submissions is November 20, 2026.
