What's Happening?
The La Plata Economic Development Alliance is actively advancing initiatives to improve workforce housing and child care access in the region. Sarah Tober, the executive director, presented the alliance's achievements to the Durango City Council, highlighting
the contributions of the Regional Housing Alliance's housing catalyst fund. This fund has supported two significant workforce housing projects in Durango, including the Lightner Creek Commons and Rivergate Lot 4 and 5, with financial awards totaling $175,000. Additionally, the alliance has raised $1.2 million for the catalyst fund, contributing to the development of 550 housing units across La Plata County. The alliance is also focusing on child care, having identified $5.6 million for the Early Childcare Investment Fund, aimed at creating 260 new child care slots and increasing wages for child care workers. Funding sources include commitments from local foundations, tax revenue allocations, and congressional spending earmarks.
Why It's Important?
The initiatives led by the La Plata Economic Development Alliance are crucial for addressing the pressing needs of workforce housing and child care in La Plata County. By investing in these areas, the alliance is helping to stabilize and grow essential services that support the local economy and community well-being. The development of affordable housing units is vital for attracting and retaining a skilled workforce, while expanding child care access ensures that working families have the support they need. The alliance's efforts also highlight the importance of local investment in the face of uncertain federal and state funding, demonstrating a proactive approach to community development.
What's Next?
The alliance plans to continue its efforts by closing the current round of catalyst fund awards and further developing the Early Childcare Investment Fund. As new child care centers open and additional housing projects progress, the alliance will work with businesses to secure investments, leveraging tax incentives to attract funding. The ongoing collaboration with local government and community organizations will be key to sustaining these initiatives and potentially influencing similar efforts in other regions.
