What's Happening?
Elawa Farm Foundation in Lake Forest has successfully met its goal of having 10% of its workforce comprised of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This initiative is part of their Workforce Development Program, which began as a partnership
with the Center for Enriched Living (CEL) in 2022. The program aims to provide greater employment opportunities and accessibility for people with developmental disabilities. Currently, six members of their year-round workforce are part of this program, working in various roles such as food runners, bussers, custodial staff, and gardeners. The foundation plans to expand this initiative by hiring more individuals from the program.
Why It's Important?
This development is significant as it sets a precedent for inclusive employment practices, demonstrating how organizations can integrate individuals with disabilities into their workforce. By providing job opportunities and support, Elawa Farm Foundation is helping to break down barriers and promote inclusivity in the workplace. This initiative not only benefits the individuals employed but also enriches the organization by bringing diverse perspectives and skills. It serves as a model for other businesses and organizations to follow, potentially influencing broader societal changes in employment practices for people with disabilities.
What's Next?
Elawa Farm Foundation plans to continue expanding its Workforce Development Program by hiring more individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. They aim to inspire other organizations to adopt similar inclusive employment practices. The ongoing partnership with CEL and support from the Illinois Department of Human Services will be crucial in identifying and training suitable candidates for the program. As the foundation grows, it will likely explore additional roles and opportunities to further integrate these individuals into their operations.
