What's Happening?
Pakistan has commissioned its first Chinese-built submarine, marking a significant enhancement in its naval capabilities. The Hangor-class submarine, an export variant of China's 039A Yuan-class, was officially inducted in a ceremony in Sanya, China,
attended by Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Navy Chief Naveed Ashraf. This development is part of a $5 billion deal for eight submarines, four of which will be built in China and the rest in Pakistan under a technology-transfer agreement. The submarines are equipped with advanced sensors, torpedoes, and anti-ship cruise missiles, significantly boosting Pakistan's undersea warfare capabilities. This move is seen as a strategic enhancement in response to regional tensions, particularly with India, which is also upgrading its submarine fleet.
Why It's Important?
The commissioning of the Chinese submarine is a strategic move by Pakistan to bolster its defense capabilities in the face of regional tensions, particularly with India. The submarine enhances Pakistan's ability to secure vital sea lines of communication in the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. This development also underscores the deepening defense ties between Pakistan and China, with China supplying a significant portion of Pakistan's military imports. The move is likely to influence the strategic balance in the region, as India and Pakistan continue to modernize their military capabilities amid ongoing disputes.
What's Next?
The induction of the Hangor-class submarine is expected to be followed by the commissioning of additional submarines under the current deal, with all Chinese-built submarines scheduled for induction by 2028. This development may prompt further military enhancements by India, which is reportedly in talks to acquire additional submarines from Germany. The ongoing military build-up in the region could lead to increased tensions and a potential arms race, as both countries seek to assert their influence in the strategically important Indian Ocean region.
