Zambia has initiated a new program aimed at enhancing its ability to manage cholera outbreaks through community-focused strategies. The Cholera Community Protection Game Pilot Initiative, supported by the World Health Organization, was launched to improve
community-based surveillance and early detection of cholera cases. The initiative also aims to enhance preparedness planning at various levels and improve coordination among stakeholders. George Sinyangwe, the permanent secretary for donor coordination at the Ministry of Health, emphasized the importance of this initiative in building resilient health systems and achieving health security goals. The program places a strong emphasis on empowering frontline responders, particularly community health workers. This comes after Zambia declared the end of its latest cholera outbreak, which resulted in 26 deaths across 25 districts.
