PremieHealth, a biotech startup spun out of the University of Melbourne, is developing novel fortifiers for premature babies inspired by the unique properties of marsupial milk. Founders Professor Kevin Nicholas and Associate Professor Julie Sharp discovered
that marsupial milk contains specific bioactive compounds that signal organ development in their highly underdeveloped young. Human premature babies, who miss crucial in-utero developmental signals, often face lifelong health issues. PremieHealth has compiled a proprietary database of 105 such bioactives, targeting critical areas like brain, lung, and gut development. Their initial product will be a precision-fermented fortifier based on human breast milk proteins, aiming to address the scarcity of donor human milk, with future plans to incorporate marsupial-inspired bioactives.

PremieHealth aims to raise $4 million by the end of the year to fund research into its database of bioactives. Their first product, a precision-fermented human breast milk protein fortifier, is projected to take two years for regulatory approval, followed by another year to reach the market. They hope to classify it as a food product to expedite the approval process, avoiding lengthy pharmaceutical trials. Subsequent products will integrate the marsupial-inspired bioactives, initially targeting brain, lung, and gut development, with future plans for kidneys, eyesight, and hearing. The company envisions a suite of powdered fortifiers tailored to specific gestational weeks. While their initial focus is the premature baby market, they also see potential applications in the broader baby nutrition market and even in anti-aging and dementia treatments.
