Scientists have successfully measured the power of jets emitted by a black hole in the Cygnus X-1 system, a binary system consisting of a black hole and a massive star. The research, published in Nature Astronomy, reveals that the jets, which are among
the most energetic phenomena in the universe, are influenced by the stellar wind from the companion star. This wind is strong enough to bend the jets, causing them to change direction as the black hole and star orbit each other. The study utilized high-resolution imaging techniques to measure the jets' power, equivalent to 10,000 suns.
