What's Happening?
The European Union has decided to extend the mandate of Operation ASPIDES, a maritime security initiative, until February 28, 2027. This decision follows a strategic review of the operation, which was initially launched in February 2024 in response to Houthi
attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea. The operation aims to provide defensive maritime security, protect vessels, and ensure freedom of navigation in the region. The EU Council has allocated nearly €15 million ($18 million) to cover the costs of the operation, which involves three naval vessels from Greece, Italy, and Spain. Since its inception, Operation ASPIDES has supported over 1,570 vessels.
