What's Happening?
Elliston Berry, a teenager who was targeted by deepfake nudes, has collaborated with cybersecurity firm Adaptive Security to create an online training course. The course is designed to educate students, parents, and school staff about non-consensual explicit
deepfake image abuse. It aims to raise awareness and provide resources for dealing with such incidents, including legal information under the Take It Down Act. The course is available for free and includes lessons on recognizing AI-generated deepfakes and understanding sextortion. This initiative comes in response to the growing prevalence of deepfake technology and its misuse, particularly among teenagers.
Why It's Important?
The development of this training course addresses a critical gap in education regarding digital safety and the misuse of AI technology. As deepfake technology becomes more accessible, the potential for abuse increases, posing significant risks to privacy and mental health, especially among young people. By educating students and educators, the course aims to prevent victimization and empower individuals to respond effectively to such threats. This initiative also highlights the need for updated legal frameworks and support systems to protect individuals from digital harassment and exploitation.
