What's Happening?
The U.S. Air Force has issued a Request for Information (RFI) for a new family of aerial targets designed to replicate a wide spectrum of airborne threats. These threats range from small, swarming drones to advanced stealth fighters, large uncrewed aircraft,
strategic bombers, and airborne early warning aircraft. The Air Force emphasizes the need for these targets to be realistic enough to challenge modern sensors and weapons, yet inexpensive and simple enough to be routinely risked or even destroyed during testing. This initiative seeks to move beyond current target systems, such as converted QF-16 fighter jets, which are costly to operate and cannot effectively simulate fifth-generation stealth aircraft or massed drone attacks. The RFI specifically encourages proposals from non-traditional, commercially derived, or dual-use solutions to achieve cost-effectiveness, scalability, and simplicity.
