New research from the Thünen Institute for Organic Farming in Germany suggests that organic farming practices do not inherently lead to better animal welfare compared to conventional farming. The study, which analyzed 86 scientific papers from Europe
and North America published between 1990 and June 2023, included 623 comparisons between organic and conventional livestock farming. The key finding is that animal health and welfare are less dependent on the organic or conventional label and more on how individual farms are managed and how producers care for their animals. While organic guidelines offer potential for improved animal welfare, they do not guarantee it. For instance, organic farms often score better in areas like bedding and freedom of movement, leading to fewer lameness and joint problems in animals. However, some studies have shown higher prevalence of certain issues, such as joint disorders in finishing pigs due to outdoor pathogens, and increased parasites like Toxoplasma gondii and Ascaris larvae on organic farms. The research highlights the need for organic certification to focus more on the animal itself, including behavior and emotional well-being, an area where relatively little research has been conducted.
