New Castle County police have identified Hannah Graham Kleitz, whose grave in Wilmington was desecrated over two decades ago. Her remains were discovered in Fox Point in 2011, along with a skull, in a wooded
area off Edgemoor Road. Initial investigations determined the skeletal remains belonged to a white female, estimated to be between 25 and 50 years old. Despite entering the case information into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System and extracting a DNA profile, her identity remained unknown. The case was reopened in 2019 by the New Castle County Police Cold Case Squad. As part of the renewed effort, a three-dimensional scan of the skull was used by a forensic art professor from George Mason University to create a facial reconstruction. Additionally, Detective Steve Smugeresky of the Montgomery County Police Department conducted investigative genealogy research, which led to a potential familial match in January. This match connected investigators to relatives of the woman whose Riverview Cemetery mausoleum was desecrated in 2002. With the family's cooperation, an exhumation was performed, and DNA comparison positively identified the remains as Hannah Graham Kleitz, who died in 1907. On August 27, her extended family returned her remains to her grave in Riverview Cemetery.
