What's Happening?
The Cheng-Lan Foundation, an initiative aimed at supporting artists from the global majority, has opened in Hong Kong. Founded by Brian Yue, the foundation seeks to provide a platform for artists, curators, and writers from African, Asian, Indigenous,
and Latin American backgrounds. The foundation's mission is to challenge the Western-centric focus of the contemporary art world by offering exhibitions, residencies, and commissions. Its inaugural exhibition features Manila-based artist Cian Dayrit, known for his work on colonialism and resistance. The foundation also plans to build a permanent collection and engage in international collaborations.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of the Cheng-Lan Foundation is a significant step towards diversifying the contemporary art scene, which has traditionally been dominated by Western perspectives. By focusing on artists from historically overlooked communities, the foundation aims to broaden the narrative and representation within the art world. This initiative not only provides opportunities for underrepresented artists but also enriches the cultural landscape by introducing diverse perspectives and stories. The foundation's efforts to make art more accessible through international collaborations and public engagement further enhance its impact.
