A cybersecurity expert, Evan Ottinger, has highlighted the dangers of posting images of house keys on social media. Ottinger, a Virginia-based ethical hacker, demonstrated how easily a key can be replicated using a photograph, 3D printing technology,
and freely available tools. He used key-decoding overlays and a CAD tool to create a digital model of a key from a photo, which was then 3D printed. This experiment underscores the vulnerability of physical security systems to digital threats, as Ottinger was able to produce a working key in about 15 minutes.
