In 1965, NASA's Mariner 4 spacecraft made history by capturing the first close-up images of Mars. However, due to the slow processing speed of the computers at the time, the engineers at the Jet Propulsion
Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California, improvised a unique solution. Led by Richard Grumm, the team used art pastels to hand-color numerical data strips that represented the brightness values of the images. This creative approach allowed them to visualize Mars' surface before the official black-and-white photographs were processed.
