What's Happening?
Austin Peay State University students, in collaboration with the Customs House Museum & Cultural Center, have been honored with a 2026 Award of Excellence from the Tennessee Association of Museums. The award recognizes their student-led walking tours
in historic downtown Clarksville, which highlight diverse historical topics such as Black history, Jewish American history, and women’s history. Under the guidance of Dr. Cate LiaBraaten, students conducted original research and designed unique tours that engaged the public and drew 150 attendees. The project not only provided educational experiences but also led to professional opportunities, including museum internships and staff positions.
Why It's Important?
The recognition of the walking tours underscores the value of integrating academic research with public engagement. This initiative not only enriches the cultural landscape of Clarksville but also provides students with practical experience and career opportunities in the field of public history. By highlighting local history, the project fosters a deeper understanding of the community's heritage, which is crucial as Clarksville continues to grow. The success of the tours demonstrates the potential for educational institutions to collaborate with cultural organizations to create impactful community programs.
What's Next?
The Customs House Museum & Cultural Center plans to host the Tennessee Association of Museums conference in Clarksville next year, which could lead to further partnerships and projects. The continued collaboration between Austin Peay State University and the museum is likely to expand, offering more opportunities for students and enriching the community's cultural offerings. The success of the walking tours may inspire similar initiatives in other communities, promoting the preservation and appreciation of local history.
