What's Happening?
Gemma Gee, a wild food forager, is encouraging people to engage with nature through foraging walks in Northumberland. Having developed a passion for foraging during the COVID-19 lockdowns, Gee now leads groups on guided walks, teaching them to identify
and safely gather edible plants, fruits, and mushrooms. Her initiative aims to provide participants with a new perspective on their natural surroundings, challenging the notion that one must live in rural areas to enjoy foraging. Gee emphasizes the mental health benefits of being in nature and the empowerment that comes from learning about wild foods. Her efforts have also led to a partnership with Visit Northumberland, promoting local tourism and nature engagement.
Why It's Important?
Foraging offers a sustainable way to connect with nature, promoting mental well-being and environmental awareness. Gee's initiative highlights the importance of local green spaces and the potential for urban residents to engage with nature. By teaching people to forage, Gee is fostering a deeper appreciation for the environment and encouraging sustainable practices. This movement can lead to increased interest in conservation efforts and support for local ecosystems. Additionally, the mental health benefits associated with nature activities are significant, offering a natural remedy for stress and anxiety.
