What's Happening?
The U.S. Army has awarded Hanwha Defense USA, a subsidiary of South Korea’s Hanwha Aerospace, a contract to deliver K9 mobile howitzer prototypes. This agreement is part of the Army's new self-propelled howitzer modernization program. The deal, potentially
worth up to $233 million, involves the accelerated delivery of six prototype Mobile Tactical Cannon (MTC) systems, with an option for an additional 12. These prototypes will be used by soldiers in a series of operational experiments to evaluate their performance, reliability, and supportability under realistic combat conditions. The data gathered from these experiments will directly inform senior leaders' decisions regarding future fielding of the howitzers. Hanwha Defense USA competed against several other international and domestic defense companies, including Elbit America, Leonardo DRS, Rheinmetall, and BAE Systems, which proposed its Archer platform.
