A new study published in Gastro Hep Advances indicates that consuming at least one sugar-sweetened beverage daily may more than double the risk of developing stomach cancer. Researchers analyzed health data from over 112,000 individuals who participated
in large studies starting in 1976 and 1986, tracking their diet and lifestyle over many years. The findings revealed that participants who drank one or more sugar-sweetened beverages per day, including carbonated drinks, punch, lemonade, and sports drinks, had a 2.45 times higher risk of stomach cancer compared to those who consumed less than one serving per month. This association was not observed with artificially sweetened beverages. Senior study author Andrew T. Chan, MD, MPH, a gastroenterologist and epidemiologist with the Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute, noted that nearly 65% of U.S. adults consume at least one such beverage daily, making this a significant public health concern. Previous research has already linked sugar-sweetened beverages to increased risks of colorectal, breast, and liver cancers.
