What's Happening?
AMD has entered into a $1 billion partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy to develop two advanced supercomputers, named Lux and Discovery, in collaboration with Oracle and Hewlett Packard Enterprise.
These supercomputers will be housed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. Lux is expected to be operational by early 2026, while Discovery is slated for 2029. The initiative builds on the success of the Frontier supercomputer, previously the fastest in the world. Lux is described as an 'AI Factory' designed to enhance AI-driven scientific research, while Discovery will focus on improving performance and energy efficiency, supporting breakthroughs in various scientific fields.
