What's Happening?
The Government Documents Round Table (GODORT) of the American Library Association (ALA) has opened nominations for several key positions. GODORT is seeking volunteers for three elected ALA GODORT officer roles: Chair-Elect, Treasurer, and Secretary. Additionally,
nominations are being accepted for appointments to the Depository Library Council (DLC). The mission of GODORT is to provide a forum for discussion among librarians working with government documents, initiate programs to enhance the availability and bibliographic control of documents, improve communication between documents librarians and other librarians, and contribute to the education and training of documents librarians. Interested individuals are encouraged to submit their forms by November 30, 2026. Further information regarding ALA GODORT elected positions can be found in the GODORT PPM, and details for DLC nominations are available through the GODORT Nominating Committee. Julia Ezzo, Chair of the GODORT Membership & Nominating Committee, is the contact for any questions.
Why It's Important?
This call for volunteers is crucial for maintaining the operational effectiveness and strategic direction of GODORT, an integral part of the American Library Association. The individuals filling these roles will directly influence the policies and initiatives related to government documents, which are vital for public access to information and governmental transparency. The Depository Library Council, in particular, plays a significant role in advising on the federal depository library program, ensuring that government information is accessible to all U.S. citizens. Active participation from librarians across the country in these positions helps to strengthen the network of government information professionals, fostering collaboration and the exchange of ideas. This ensures that libraries can continue to effectively manage, preserve, and provide access to critical government data and publications, supporting informed civic engagement and research.
What's Next?
The nomination period for GODORT elected officers and Depository Library Council appointments will close on November 30, 2026. Following this deadline, the GODORT Nominating Committee will review submissions and proceed with the election and appointment processes. The newly elected officers and appointed council members will then assume their roles, contributing to the ongoing mission of GODORT and the DLC. Their immediate tasks will likely involve participating in strategic planning, addressing current challenges in government document management, and advocating for policies that support public access to information. The engagement of new talent is expected to bring fresh perspectives and energy to these critical functions within the ALA.
Beyond the Headlines
The continuous need for volunteers in organizations like GODORT highlights the foundational role of professional associations in maintaining specialized expertise and advocacy within the library sector. Beyond the immediate operational needs, the involvement of librarians in these roles underscores a broader commitment to information literacy and democratic principles. Government documents often contain essential data for research, policy analysis, and public accountability. The efforts of GODORT and its members are therefore not just about library management, but about safeguarding the public's right to know and ensuring the integrity of the information ecosystem. The call for volunteers also reflects the evolving landscape of information access, as digital formats and new technologies present both opportunities and challenges for managing and disseminating government information.
