What's Happening?
The Portage County Sheriff's Office is organizing an in-person hunter safety class in Stevens Point, scheduled for June. The classes will be held on June 22, 23, 25, and 30, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the training room at the sheriff's office. Additionally,
a field day is planned for June 27 at the Dewey Shooting Range from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. The course is open to all, but the material is specifically designed for students aged 11 and older. Participants are required to register on the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources website, and there is a $10 fee for the course.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is significant as it promotes safe hunting practices, which are crucial for preventing accidents and ensuring the safety of both hunters and the general public. By targeting younger participants, the program aims to instill responsible hunting habits early on. The course also supports community engagement by involving local law enforcement in educational activities, thereby fostering trust and cooperation between the community and the sheriff's office.
What's Next?
Participants interested in the hunter safety class can register online, and those with questions are encouraged to contact Deputy Austin Anderson for more information. The successful completion of this course may lead to more such educational initiatives by the sheriff's office, potentially expanding to cover other safety and community-related topics.
