What's Happening?
Research in Practice and the National Children's Bureau have announced the launch of a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Community of Practice (CoP). This initiative builds upon two previously successful events for DEI leads and is designed to further
advance DEI efforts within organizations. The first CoP session is scheduled to take place from 10:00-12:00 on December 8, 2026. The community is specifically tailored for professionals who lead or contribute to DEI initiatives within their organizations, as well as those who support or coordinate employee networks. The primary goal of the CoP is to provide a platform for regular, honest conversations and shared learning, aiming to equip members with greater confidence and better tools to progress their DEI priorities effectively.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of a DEI Community of Practice by Research in Practice and the National Children's Bureau underscores the ongoing commitment to fostering inclusive environments, particularly within sectors related to research and children's services. This initiative is crucial because it moves beyond one-off training sessions to create a sustained network for professionals dedicated to DEI. By facilitating continuous dialogue and shared learning, the CoP can help organizations navigate complex DEI challenges, share effective strategies, and collectively address systemic inequalities. This collaborative approach can lead to more impactful and sustainable DEI outcomes, ensuring that equity and inclusion are deeply embedded in organizational practices rather than being treated as isolated projects. Ultimately, this can improve service delivery and outcomes for diverse populations, especially vulnerable children and families.
What's Next?
The inaugural session of the DEI Community of Practice is scheduled for December 8, 2026. Following this initial meeting, the CoP is expected to hold regular sessions, fostering ongoing engagement and learning among its members. Participants will likely share case studies, discuss emerging best practices, and collaborate on solutions to common DEI challenges. The insights and strategies developed within this community could influence policy and practice within member organizations, potentially leading to more equitable services and internal cultures. The success of this CoP may also inspire other sectors to establish similar collaborative platforms for advancing DEI, creating a broader network of shared knowledge and expertise.
Beyond the Headlines
The creation of this Community of Practice highlights a growing recognition that effective DEI work requires sustained effort, peer support, and continuous learning. It acknowledges that DEI leaders often face unique challenges and can benefit significantly from a dedicated space to share experiences and strategies. This initiative also subtly emphasizes the importance of practical application and real-world problem-solving in DEI, moving beyond theoretical discussions to actionable insights. By focusing on 'honest conversation,' the CoP aims to create a safe space for discussing difficult topics and learning from both successes and failures. This collaborative model could foster a more resilient and adaptable approach to DEI, ensuring that organizations are better equipped to respond to evolving societal needs and promote genuine inclusion.
