What's Happening?
Michelle Armani, a Ticonderoga resident and former special education teacher, is leading an initiative called Ready 4 Real, which prepares high school students for entry into the workforce. Founded in 2018 with Deb Cleary, the program works with high schools
in Essex and Franklin Counties, offering career workshops and professional skill development at no cost to students. Ready 4 Real focuses on teaching essential skills beyond resume building, such as communication, conflict management, and emotional intelligence. Armani and her team match students with work experiences, internships, or jobs based on their interests and abilities, aiming to help them discover career paths within their local North Country communities. The program also provides supportive services, including gas cards for transportation and gift cards for interview attire, to address obstacles students might face in securing employment.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is crucial for addressing workforce development challenges in rural areas like the North Country, particularly for young people transitioning from high school. By equipping students with practical professional skills and connecting them directly with local employment opportunities, Ready 4 Real helps bridge the gap between education and the demands of the job market. This is especially vital for students from families with limited employment history, who may lack guidance in navigating the job search process. The program's focus on retaining young talent within the region is significant for the economic vitality of an area with an aging population. By fostering a skilled and engaged local workforce, Ready 4 Real contributes to the long-term sustainability and prosperity of North Country communities, preventing brain drain and ensuring a continuous supply of local talent for various industries.
What's Next?
Michelle Armani plans to expand Ready 4 Real, having recently hired new staff to support this growth. She aims to bring younger individuals into the business, recognizing the value of peer-to-peer mentorship for students. The program will continue to support students before, during, and after their work experiences, often following up for a year or more to ensure their success. Ready 4 Real also seeks to expand its specific grants for students with special needs, acknowledging the additional challenges this group faces in entering the workforce. The ongoing efforts to connect students with local employers and provide comprehensive support are expected to further strengthen the workforce pipeline in the North Country, ensuring that more young people can find meaningful employment and contribute to their communities.
Beyond the Headlines
Ready 4 Real's approach goes beyond mere job placement; it addresses deeper societal issues related to equity, opportunity, and community resilience. By providing comprehensive support, including practical resources like gas cards and clothing, the program tackles systemic barriers that can prevent disadvantaged youth from accessing employment. Armani's background in special education informs the program's inclusive philosophy, aiming to be a 'great equalizer' by ensuring all students, regardless of their background or challenges, can connect with their community and find purpose through work. This initiative highlights the critical role of local, grassroots efforts in fostering economic development and social mobility, demonstrating how targeted interventions can create significant positive impacts on individual lives and the broader community. It also underscores the importance of investing in human capital as a cornerstone for regional growth and sustainability.
