What's Happening?
Plaion, in collaboration with SNK, is developing the Neo Geo+, a replica of the Neo Geo AES console, which promises to deliver a gaming experience superior to emulation. The console will utilize newly manufactured chips based on the original hardware,
re-engineered to modern standards. This approach aims to provide an authentic retro gaming experience by playing both new and old game cartridges natively. Modding legend Furrtek, involved in the project, believes the Neo Geo+ has the potential to be the best since SNK ceased hardware production. However, some experts, like FPGA developer Pramod Somashekar, criticize the approach as a 'bait and switch,' arguing that the use of ASICs limits future updates.
Why It's Important?
The development of the Neo Geo+ represents a significant advancement in retro gaming technology, offering enthusiasts a more authentic experience than traditional emulation. By using hardware that closely replicates the original, Plaion and SNK aim to honor the legacy of the Neo Geo brand and cater to dedicated fans. This project could set a new standard for retro console reproductions, influencing future developments in the industry. However, the criticism regarding the use of ASICs highlights potential limitations in adaptability and future-proofing, which could impact consumer perception and acceptance.
