What's Happening?
Bronx Lacrosse, founded by Dan Leventhal, is a nonprofit organization that uses lacrosse to engage middle and high school students in the South Bronx. Established in 2018, the program offers a year-round academic and mentorship initiative that leverages
the sport to motivate students to excel both on the field and in the classroom. Leventhal, a former college lacrosse player and Teach for America corps member, started the program to connect with students and build a community. The initiative requires students to maintain good attendance and academic performance to participate. Bronx Lacrosse has expanded to include both boys' and girls' teams, providing free equipment and support through partnerships and donations. The program focuses on algebra readiness and life skills such as leadership and accountability, aiming to foster confidence and success in various aspects of life.
Why It's Important?
Bronx Lacrosse addresses significant barriers to sports participation for urban youth, such as the cost and availability of equipment and fields. By providing free access to lacrosse, the program opens opportunities for students who might otherwise be excluded from the sport. This initiative not only promotes physical activity but also enhances educational outcomes by encouraging school attendance and academic achievement. The program's success stories, like that of Jordany, a student who earned a full scholarship to play lacrosse at the University of Delaware, highlight the transformative impact of combining sports with education. Bronx Lacrosse challenges traditional demographics in the sport, promoting diversity and inclusion by engaging predominantly black and brown students.
What's Next?
Bronx Lacrosse plans to continue expanding its reach and impact by strengthening partnerships and securing more resources to support its mission. The program aims to further integrate academic support and mentorship, ensuring students are prepared for high school and college. As the organization grows, it seeks to inspire similar initiatives in other urban areas, demonstrating the potential of sports as a tool for educational and personal development. The program's ongoing success could influence policy discussions on youth sports funding and educational support in underserved communities.
Beyond the Headlines
The Bronx Lacrosse program highlights broader societal issues such as access to sports and education for marginalized communities. By providing a platform for students to excel, the program challenges stereotypes and promotes social mobility. It also underscores the importance of community-based initiatives in addressing educational disparities and fostering youth development. The program's model could serve as a blueprint for other organizations seeking to use sports as a means of empowerment and change.
