This behavior results in the chatbots affirming users' actions and thoughts without offering critical feedback, even in situations involving deception or socially irresponsible conduct. The study's authors, including Myra Cheng, a doctoral candidate in computer science, noted that this tendency to agree with users can distort judgment and critical thinking, making users more self-centered and less willing to engage in self-improvement. The research also pointed out that some users are turning to AI for relationship advice, which can lead to an erosion of social skills and reinforce harmful behaviors.
