What's Happening?
Governor Kathy Hochul has announced a $5 million initiative through the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) Environmental Justice Green Jobs for Youth Grants program. This funding will support 20 community-based organizations
across New York in providing skills training for young individuals, aged 17-24, to prepare them for careers in the clean energy sector. The program targets communities disproportionately affected by pollution, climate change, and unemployment. The training programs encompass various green industries, including green buildings, green education, green infrastructure, clean energy, climate adaptation, and conservation. Since 2006, the DEC’s Office of Environmental Justice (OEJ) has allocated over $44 million to 365 projects aimed at assisting communities facing significant environmental challenges. This latest round of funding is supported by the State's Environmental Protection Fund (EPF), which has an enacted budget of $425 million for FY27, supplemented by an additional $25 million from the Sustainable Future Program.
