What's Happening?
A new book titled 'Birmingham: A Drone's Eye View' showcases aerial images of Birmingham, providing a fresh perspective on the city. The book, authored by photographer Jonathan Berg, captures the city center
and suburbs through drone photography, revealing aspects of Birmingham that have not been seen before. Berg, who has been documenting the city since the 1990s, previously chartered planes to capture high-level views for his books. The drone technology has now enabled him to achieve the desired shots more efficiently. The book highlights various landmarks, including Edgbaston Stadium and the Hare & Hounds pub, and aims to portray Birmingham as an inclusive and vibrant city. A portion of the book's proceeds is donated to the Birmingham homelessness charity Sifa Fireside.
Why It's Important?
The publication of 'Birmingham: A Drone's Eye View' is significant as it offers a new way to appreciate urban landscapes through drone technology. This approach not only enhances the visual documentation of cities but also contributes to the cultural narrative by showcasing lesser-known aspects of Birmingham. The book's success, with 5,000 copies sold in nine months, indicates a strong public interest in seeing cities from new angles. Additionally, the charitable aspect of the book, with donations to a local homelessness charity, underscores the potential for art and photography to contribute positively to social causes.
