What's Happening?
Angus Council has appointed JBA Consulting to develop designs for enhancing Brechin's Flood Protection Scheme. The consultancy is conducting a drone flight survey and a Preliminary Ecological Survey in the Brechin River Street area to assist in creating
a 3D model for future design measurements. Community engagement is a key component of the project, with plans for online meetings, drop-in sessions, and updates via social media and the Engage Angus web pages. The initiative is funded by a £100k allocation from the Year 4 UK Shared Prosperity Fund 2025/26, approved by elected members in June.
Why It's Important?
The appointment of JBA Consulting for the Brechin Flood Protection Scheme design uplift is crucial for enhancing the area's resilience against flooding. The project aims to increase the height of the existing flood defenses, potentially safeguarding local residents and businesses from future flood risks. Effective community engagement ensures that stakeholders are informed and involved in the decision-making process, fostering transparency and trust. The funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund underscores the importance of investing in infrastructure to mitigate environmental challenges and protect communities.
What's Next?
Community engagement on the design proposal options is expected to begin in December, with full details to be confirmed soon. The Council's Director of Infrastructure and Environment will report on the progress and outcomes of the design work and community engagement to the Communities Committee. The ongoing collaboration between JBA Consulting and Angus Council will focus on refining the designs and ensuring they meet the needs of the community while addressing ecological considerations.
Beyond the Headlines
The Brechin Flood Protection Scheme design uplift highlights the broader issue of climate resilience and the need for proactive measures to address environmental challenges. The integration of advanced technologies, such as drone surveys, reflects a modern approach to infrastructure development. The project's emphasis on community engagement demonstrates a commitment to inclusive planning, ensuring that local voices are heard and considered in the decision-making process.
