Dialog Axiata, a Sri Lankan telecommunications company, has partnered with the Ministry of Environment's Marine Environment Protection Authority to introduce a 5G-enabled autonomous water-surface cleaning
robot. This innovative device is designed to collect floating waste and monitor environmental conditions in real-time. Utilizing 5G connectivity, artificial intelligence, and robotics, the robot navigates lakes, rivers, and canals to gather debris such as plastic bottles, bags, and leaves. The robot is powered by a carbon-neutral electric system and employs AI for garbage detection, obstacle avoidance, and precise positioning. It can clean 50-100 acres of surface water per mission and collect up to 50 kg of waste per run, effectively preventing plastics from entering the ocean. Dialog Axiata's 5G network facilitates real-time HD video streaming, allowing operators to guide the robot remotely from anywhere in the country.

Dialog Axiata has been trialing 5G since 2018, alongside rival SLT-Mobitel, as they await the allocation of 5G spectrum by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL). The TRCSL has initiated the 5G spectrum auction process, with the final list of approved bidders expected on November 24. The auction is scheduled to take place on December 3 and will officially close on December 15. The successful deployment of 5G technology could further enhance the capabilities of such environmental initiatives, paving the way for more widespread adoption of similar technologies.
