Scientists have identified a previously unknown fault, named the Mountainville Fault, beneath New Jersey, which is believed to have caused the magnitude 4.8 earthquake in Tewksbury in April 2024. The discovery was made through LiDAR topography scans and
analysis of aftershock data, revealing a fault zone 3.5 kilometers west of the earthquake's epicenter. The Mountainville Fault is classified as an 'immature' basement-hosted fault, characterized by fractures in old crystalline bedrock. Researchers from Columbia University suggest that this fault, along with other lesser-known faults, may pose significant earthquake hazards in the seismically unstable US east coast.
