What's Happening?
The American Cancer Society (ACS) has launched the Accountants United to End Cancer Council, a new initiative aimed at uniting the accounting profession to support cancer research and patient care. Founded by Peter J. Scalise, the council seeks to leverage
the extensive network of approximately 87,000 accounting firms across the United States to raise awareness and secure funding for the ACS's mission. The council encourages accounting firms to participate in fundraising activities, such as organizing events in conjunction with ACS's Relay for Life and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walks. The inaugural meeting of the council is scheduled for December 16, 2025, in New York City, where members will discuss goals and objectives for 2026.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is significant as it mobilizes a large professional community to contribute to cancer research and patient support, potentially increasing the resources available for these efforts. By engaging accounting firms in fundraising, the ACS can expand its reach and impact, enhancing its ability to provide critical services such as patient support, transportation to treatment, and lodging. The council's efforts could lead to increased public awareness and funding, which are crucial for advancing cancer research and improving patient outcomes. This collaboration also highlights the role of professional communities in addressing public health challenges.
What's Next?
The council's first in-person meeting will set the stage for its 2026 activities, including planned town hall meetings and fundraising events. As the council gains momentum, it is expected to attract more accounting firms to join the cause, further amplifying its fundraising capabilities. The ACS and the council will likely continue to explore innovative ways to engage the accounting community and expand their fundraising efforts, potentially setting a precedent for other professional groups to follow.
