What's Happening?
The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) has approved a significant infrastructure project for the Chinese Economic and Industrial Zone (CEIZ) in Anwara, Chattogram, Bangladesh. The project, valued at Tk 4,189 crore, aims to develop
supporting infrastructure to attract export-oriented manufacturing investments. The CEIZ is strategically located near Chattogram Port, the Karnaphuli Tunnel, and Shah Amanat International Airport, making it an attractive destination for foreign investors. The project is expected to attract at least $500 million in foreign direct investment and create over 100,000 jobs. The infrastructure development will be financed through a combination of government funds and loans under China's Preferential Buyer’s Credit arrangement.
Why It's Important?
The development of the CEIZ is a significant step in strengthening Bangladesh's integration into regional and global supply chains. By enhancing industrial competitiveness and promoting export diversification, the project is expected to boost Bangladesh's economic growth. The strategic location of the CEIZ will facilitate increased industrial traffic through the Karnaphuli Tunnel, improving its commercial viability. The project is also expected to attract substantial domestic investment, transforming Anwara into a major industrial cluster. This development aligns with the vision of creating a 'One City, Two Towns' model, which aims to ease pressure on Chattogram city and stimulate economic activity in the region.
What's Next?
The project is set to be implemented by the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) from January 2027 to December 2031. The first phase will focus on essential infrastructure such as roads, power transmission lines, and utility services to make the zone investment-ready. The project has already attracted interest from over 100 Chinese companies in various sectors, including leather, light engineering, and chemicals. As the infrastructure develops, it is expected to accelerate the transformation of Anwara into a significant industrial hub, complementing existing investments in energy, power, and manufacturing projects in the area.
Beyond the Headlines
The CEIZ project highlights the growing economic collaboration between Bangladesh and China. It underscores the potential for increased technology transfer and industrial development in Bangladesh, driven by Chinese investment. The project also reflects broader trends in regional economic integration and the strategic importance of infrastructure development in facilitating international trade and investment. As the project progresses, it may serve as a model for similar initiatives in other regions, promoting sustainable economic growth and development.
