What's Happening?
The UK Department for Education (DfE) has implemented a ChatGPT-based tool to draft email responses to citizen inquiries. This tool, which uses OpenAI's GPT-4o system, significantly reduces the time required
to draft responses from 30 minutes to just 60 seconds. The DfE receives approximately 1,000 external correspondences monthly and plans to use the AI system for about 80% of these. The tool is currently in a pilot phase and is expected to be fully operational soon, with plans to expand its training on a larger set of documents.
Why It's Important?
The adoption of AI tools like ChatGPT in government operations highlights the potential for technology to improve efficiency and streamline processes. By automating routine tasks, government departments can allocate resources more effectively and enhance service delivery. This development also underscores the growing role of AI in public administration and the need for careful implementation to ensure accuracy and reliability. The use of AI in drafting responses could serve as a model for other government agencies looking to leverage technology for improved communication.
