What's Happening?
India has launched the Samudra Manthan offshore oil and gas scheme, with a budget of $8.8 billion, to reduce its dependence on imported crude oil. The initiative, approved by the Indian Union Cabinet, focuses on deepwater and ultra-deepwater exploration
in basins such as Krishna-Godavari and Cauvery. The government will cover up to 50% of deepwater drilling costs to lower investment risks. The scheme includes seismic data acquisition, drilling of 60 wells, construction of infrastructure hubs, and establishment of manufacturing zones.
Why It's Important?
The Samudra Manthan scheme is crucial for India's energy security, aiming to increase domestic oil and gas production and reduce the country's substantial import bill. By encouraging exploration and development in offshore areas, the initiative could enhance India's self-reliance in energy resources. The scheme also represents a significant investment in the country's hydrocarbon sector, potentially attracting private investment and fostering technological advancements. Successful implementation could lead to increased domestic output and a more stable energy supply.
