What's Happening?
The Lisbon City Council has bolstered its emergency response capabilities through the RSB, which is tasked with protection and rescue activities in Lisbon. The RSB is equipped to handle various emergencies,
including firefighting, rescuing people, and shipwrecks. It operates under the European Civil Protection Mechanism, specifically the Medium Urban Search and Rescue Module (MUSAR), which aims to locate and rescue victims in rubble and provide health care until they can be transported to hospitals. The RSB can reach crisis scenes within 32 hours and operate self-sufficiently for up to seven days.
Why It's Important?
The enhancement of emergency response capabilities in Lisbon is crucial for ensuring public safety and preparedness in the face of disasters. By aligning with European standards, the RSB can effectively manage urban search and rescue operations, which is vital for a city prone to various emergencies. This development strengthens Lisbon's ability to respond swiftly and efficiently, minimizing potential casualties and damage during disasters. It also reflects a commitment to maintaining high standards of safety and protection for residents and visitors alike.
