U.S. automakers have recalled approximately 21 million vehicles due to malfunctioning backup cameras since they became mandatory in 2018, with nearly six million recalls occurring last year alone. This
issue is not exclusive to the U.S., as similar frequent recalls have been observed in Canada. Recent examples include over 17,000 Volkswagen vehicles recalled in late July due to a software problem preventing the rearview camera image from displaying, and 32,289 Honda Odyssey minivans recalled in early July for a similar issue. In April, General Motors recalled more than a quarter-million Chevrolet Malibus in Canada and the U.S. for potentially defective rear-view cameras. Other manufacturers like Toyota, Volvo, Porsche, Ford, Hyundai, and Stellantis have also issued significant recalls for backup camera problems.
