Jacob Phelps, a student from Thetford Academy, has been awarded the University of Vermont’s (UVM) Green and Gold Scholarship Award for the Class of 2027. This highly competitive scholarship, established by UVM in 2001, is granted to the most academically
talented rising high school senior in each eligible Vermont secondary school. The award covers full in-state tuition to the University of Vermont for four years. In addition to the financial support, Phelps has also received an invitation to enroll in UVM’s prestigious Patrick Leahy Honors College. During his time at Thetford Academy, Phelps pursued a rigorous academic curriculum, including honors courses and dual enrollment college classes, and was an active member of the STEM club and a three-season varsity athlete.
Why It's Important?
This scholarship highlights the University of Vermont's commitment to attracting and retaining top academic talent within the state, fostering a strong educational environment. Beyond the Headlines
The Green and Gold Scholarship, and similar programs across the U.S., play a crucial role in addressing educational equity and access. By providing full tuition, UVM helps mitigate the rising costs of higher education, which disproportionately affect lower and middle-income families. The inclusion of an honors college invitation further enriches the educational experience, offering a more challenging and engaging curriculum for high-achieving students. This approach not only supports individual students but also contributes to the overall quality and diversity of the university's student body. Such initiatives are vital for developing a skilled workforce and fostering innovation, particularly in fields like healthcare, which Phelps intends to enter. The long-term impact extends to community development, as educated graduates are more likely to contribute to their local economies and social structures.
